The Auto Industry's Natural Gas Response

A natural gas surplus and its cleaner burning properties are not enough to nudge the auto industry to take another step toward building vehicles running on natural gas. The report from IHS Cambridge Energy Research Associates and the gas surplus together aren't going to persuade them to reconsider investing in natural gas. The message for natural gas came through loud and clear at the IHS CERAWeek 2010 conference that said natural gas has a bright future in building better energy. Although the conference addresses varying forms of energy, speakers and attendees found themselves talking up natural gas because it is cheaper, more flexible and plentiful.

Devon Energy and BP Announce Sales and Joint Venture

Last November, Devon Energy Corporation said it planned to reposition the company. The company, one of Fortune magazine's "World's Most Admired Companies" and "100 Best Companies to Work For," is taking big steps to put the plan in action. Devon, an Oklahoma City oil and gas production company, says it has an agreement with British oil company BP. Devon will sell assets in Gulf of Mexico, Brazil and Azerbaijan to BP for $7 billion.

House Committee Investigates Hydraulic Fracturing

A House panel is looking into whether natural gas producers have injected toxic chemicals like benzene, toluene and xylene underground. The concern is that the toxic chemicals could taint public drinking water during the hydraulic fracturing oil drilling process, also known as fracking, that extracts natural gas from underground. The process injects huge amounts of water, sand and chemicals to crack the shale and release oil and natural gas.

2010 Louisiana Oil and Gas Industry Annual Meeting
