Fortune Magazine has released its annual list of America's "100 Best Companies to Work For" list and three natural gas drill and production companies appear on it. And all three work in North Texas' Barnett Shale. They are Devon Energy, Chesapeake Energy and EOG Resources, Inc. They appear on the list in 20th, 34th and 67th respectively.
Devon of Oklahoma City is the largest producer in Barnett Shale with 550 out of 3,900 employees there. The gas company made Fortune's list for the third consecutive year. According to Devon, its rank comes from an anonymous employee survey done by Great Place to Work Institute. The natural gas drilling company also has low turnover and encourages its employees to do the right thing.
In Devon's 100 listing, employees say great things about the CEO and president including the fact they're "accessible, ethical and caring." Employees appreciate that Devon respects people's time off. Fortune also recognized the company on its "Most Admire Companies" list.
Chesapeake Energy, also headquartered in Oklahoma City, climbed to number 34 from last year's number 73 slot. The company has a regional office in Fort Worth with 850 employees. The company has 8,200 employees with 300 open positions. Employee benefits include 401 (k) matching up to 15% of pay, stock grants and medical and dental care at headquarters. See Chesapeake Energy's Fortune listing.
EOG has made the Fortune list for the fourth year in a row. The magazine recognized the company in the categories of "Top Pay," "Best Health Care Benefits" and "Never Having a Layoff." 350 of its 1,725 employees are in Barnett Shale. "'I am just a drilling engineer,' said one employee of this fast-growing Enron spinoff, 'but CEO Mark Papa knows me by my first name and treats me as a peer.'" Houston is the home of EOG's headquarters. Here's EOG's Fortune listing.
