With production slowed as a result of the recession, manufacturers across the country have had to take steps to keep the business up and running, albeit at less than full capacity.
Many of those tough decisions have resulted in layoffs of more than 50 persons from one single employer.
Across all sectors, employers took 2,712 mass layoff actions that translated to 271,226 lost positions in April. This number was lower than the previous month.
However, the manufacturing sector alone accounted for 35 percent of all mass layoffs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics which uses the number of new filings for unemployment insurance benefits to calculate the figures.
"This April, the number of manufacturing claimants was greatest in transportation equipment (19,246) and machinery (18,614). The transportation and warehousing industry accounted for 9 percent of mass layoff events and 11 percent of associated initial claims during the month," read the BLS report.
