Small businesses recognized for achievements.
The week dedicated to celebrating small businesses - often touted as the 'backbone of the economy' - wrapped up with festivities and awards in the nation's capital from May 17-19.

An SBA-sponsored event doled out a number of honors recognizing the significant achievements of small businesses located around the country.

Many of the companies recognized were minority-owned businesses.

Jeanna Sellmeyer, an Oklahoma native of Venezuelan descent, achieved the National Small Business Person of the Year Award for her Oklahoma City-based ASSET Group, Inc.

"Hispanic-owned small businesses make important contributions to the American economy. We salute the many Hispanic-owned firms among our winners, and are pleased to present them with these awards in recognition of their entrepreneurial spirit and hard-won success," said SBA Administrator Karen G. Mills.

The SBA head said that it was businesses like these that were helping shape communities and create jobs.

Earlier this month in Pennsylvania, women in business were recognized by the governor for their role in growing businesses and creating much needed jobs throughout the state.
