The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has published an early release of its Annual Energy Outlook 2012 (AEO2012), which addresses energy market trends -- including oil and natural gas -- and highlights of potential changes in U.S. energy policies, rules, regulations and technology. EIA will release the final version in April 2012.

Natural Gas Prices Drop Last Week

Natural gas prices fell to the lowest level in 10 years due to a warmer winter and a growing surplus. The U.S. Energy Department reports current stockpiles stand at 20.8 percent above the five-year average and 19.6 percent higher than the levels from one year ago.

Could OPEC Fade and Hybrid Cars Grow by 2040?

According to ExxonMobile's Outlook for Energy, US oil imports have peaked in 2005 and have been dropping since signifying the dependence on oil from OPEC nations may shrink to almost zero by 2040. The bulk of the oil will come from Mexico, oil sands in Canada and US natural gas production.

State Agency Votes on Barnett Shale Air Rules

Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has voted 3-0 to approve new air pollution rules for Barnett Shale' natural gas facilities in North Texas. TCEQ will impose the rules that reduce emissions of toxic and smog-causing chemicals as part of a campaign to clean up smog in Texas. Environmentalists oppose the rules claiming they're not strict enough.

Eagle Ford Boom Has Good and Bad Side

When Ray Kroll took the economic development job in Karnes County a few years ago, the property value of the entire county was around $500 million.

Now, thanks to the Eagle Ford shale play, the property tax rolls have jumped to $1.3 billion.

“To think that you would use the b-word in conjunction with Karnes County is just crazy,” Kroll said. “We’re talking in billions and not millions.”
