Retailers post declines in June sales as consumers cut discretionary spending

In a blow to fabrication companies and retailers nationwide that are already struggling with their working capital, stores are reporting weaker than expected June sales numbers, particularly in mall clothing stores, the Associated Press reported.

Target Corp. reported a 6.2 percent decline in June, a steeper fall than the 5.6 percent expected by Reuters-surveyed analysts, the AP said.

Employees in manufacturing sector still feel pain

According to new statistics released by the U.S. Labor Department, nonfarm employers cut 345,000 jobs in May.

The government also reports that the unemployment rate increased from 8.9 percent in April to 9.4 percent in May. Manufacturing continued to post "steep job losses."

Texas manufacturing levels stabilized during May

Reports earlier in the year were often highlighting the steep rates of contraction being felt in the manufacturing sector, but a new study from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas says that the slowdown has moderated.

According to the Texas Manufacturing Outlook Survey, which compiles responses from business executives in the industry, the sector's rate of decline has somewhat stabilized and at the same time expectations for the future continue to improve.

The government has released its latest statistics on mass layoff actions during April, and the picture continues to be grim for manufacturing companies.

With production slowed as a result of the recession, manufacturers across the country have had to take steps to keep the business up and running, albeit at less than full capacity.
